Not A Drop To Waste, Bisbee Arizona

A Gem in the Desert

In the southwest corner of Cochise County, the City of Bisbee is a gem in the desert. Considered one of the oldest cities in Arizona, the city started out as a mining hub with large reserves of lead, zinc, and manganese, and quickly became a bustling community. With a hilly terrain and ideal temperate climate, Bisbee has experienced a complex history and has grown into one of the most unique areas in southern Arizona.

Although the community’s culture has evolved from a mining town to a well-known artist hub and hot spot for tourism, one factor in Bisbee’s identity has remained constant: the need for water. Solving water problems is deeply engrained in Bisbee’s history and remains at the forefront of its future. With a water future that continues to get more complex, now is the time for leaders in the community to come together to collaborate more on water issues and their possible solutions.

Collaborating for the Future

On July 31st, 2026, the City of Bisbee, in partnership with the University of Arizona’s Water Wise Program (U of A), and local water utility Arizona Water Company (AWC), came together to launch Not A Drop To Waste, an Integrated Demand Management Program (IDMP) that builds upon existing water conservation resources for the community.

Individually, each partner in the IDMP already provides water conservation resources for Bisbee, but there is always more that can be done. We believe that the best ideas don’t come from just one person or one entity, but from multiple minds brainstorming solutions together. Through the IDMP, leaders in the community will meet regularly to collaborate on what more can be done to educate and empower the community to take action.

Water conservation means using water as efficiently as possible and minimizing any waste, all while maintaining a desired quality of life. It’s about being mindful of every drop we use, because we have enough water for the community, but we don’t have enough to waste. And we all can play a part in this. The goal of the IDMP is to empower every part of the water equation, from water producers (like AWC) to water users (like the city, residents, and commercial businesses) to contribute to protecting our water supplies for generations to come. With a groundwater-based system like Bisbee, every gallon of water conserved is a gallon of water left in the local aquifer and saved for the future.
